Corpus Christi Moody (36-3) vs. FW Arlington Heights (29-8) 7 p.m. today, Dell Diamond, Round Rock, Texas MOODY Coach: Corky Gallegos Players to watch: Andrew Cantu, Adrian Joel Longoria, Justin Meza, Christian Garza-Gallegos, J.J. Zapata Notable: Moody is no stranger to the state tournament. The school won the Class 5A title in 2004 and the Class 4A title in 2007. Left-hander Cantu keeps hitters off balance and racks up the strikeouts. He was a huge reason Moody went undefeated in District 30-4A play. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS Coach: Tommy Elliott Players to watch: David Shipman, Mark Grace, Max Smith, John Biggs, Steven Redfield. Notable: Elliott, a 27-year veteran, has called this the best defensive team he has ever coached. It's also a team with serious offensive firepower. During a six-game stretch in April, Arlington Heights outscored its opponents 108-5.
Danbury (30-5) vs. Ponder (22-7) 1 p.m. Thursday, UFCU Disch-Falk Field, Austin DANBURY Coach: Steve Davis Players to watch: Scott Zimmerie, Garrett Zimmerie, Trey Noak, Dakota Sebesta, Mitchell Marquis Noteable: This will be Danbury's first trip to the state tournament. Danbury has an explosive offense, evidenced by a team batting average that hovers around .350. PONDER Coach: Mark Low Players to watch: Jeff Specht, Micah Easterling, Dalton Brown, Sam Terrazas, Zach Hendrix. Noteable: This is Ponder's first trip to the state tournament since 2004. Ponder reached the championship game but lost to Nacogdoches Central Heights. |
