Bowie (10-6), winners of five in a row, was held without a basket for a 5:20 stretch of the fourth period as Mesquite chopped into an eight-point deficit to take a 50-49 lead with 1:51 remaining. "We had some trouble with our post defense, but in that particular situation we had the right guy in the right position at the right time," Bowie coach Allen Gratts said. Mesquite then had an opportunity to win it after Bowie missed the front end of a one-on-one, but it missed a layup at the buzzer. Bowie advanced to the semifinals Thursday when Tre Potter made a 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds to defeat South Grand Prairie, 61-58. Colleyville Heritage coach looking for more: Colleyville Heritage extended its winning streak to nine with a 58-52 victory against Jesuit in Friday's semifinals. However, coach Greg Gober would have also preferred to see his team play smarter at key times. "I was happy with the win, but it was a struggle for us," Gober said. "We did a poor job defensively and did a poor job of taking care of the ball in crucial situations." Colleyville Heritage (13-3) hit three straight 3-pointers in the second quarter to build a 10-point lead with 2:01 left in the first half. But Jesuit managed to trim it to 29-25 at halftime. Colleyville Heritage extended that lead to nine in the third quarter, but Jesuit pulled to 48-47 with 4:38 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by E. J. McWoods. Colleyville Heritage answered with a 10-3 run over the next four minutes to secure the game. Brandon Shaw led Colleyville Heritage with 13 points. Jesuit (12-7) was led by McWoods' 16 points. Free throws lift McKinney: McKinney made 31 of 39 free throws in its 58-53 victory against South Grand Prairie in a consolation quarterfinal. By comparison, South Grand Prairie was 11-of-15. McKinney committed 10 fouls and South Grand Prairie 24. McKinney (11-6), which meets Lake Highlands in a consolation semifinal at 10:30 p.m. today, had three field goals and made 24 of 31 free throws in the second half. No home-court advantage for Plano: Plano will play the remainder of the tournament at Plano West, which is being utilized for three consolation games today. Plano meets Arlington at 12:15 p.m. there in a consolation bracket game. The winner plays another game at Plano West at 5 p.m. Plano (4-10) lost its seventh-straight game Friday when North Mesquite made a buzzer-beating layup for a 56-55 victory in a consolation quarterfinal. |
