Cross Country NewsCross country: Midlothian runner takes Class 4A Region II title in stride12:15 AM CST on Sunday, November 9, 2008ARLINGTON – Carly Kitts, Midlothian's happy-go-lucky sophomore star, shrugged when asked about winning the biggest race of her high school career. It was the reaction Midlothian coach Cindy Williams expected. "She's just a very laid back, very humble, very appreciative young lady," Williams said. "She loves to run." Kitts overtook defending state champion Sara Sutherland of Highland Park with about ¾ mile remaining to win the Class 4A Region II girls title with a personal best time of 11 minutes, 18.24 seconds over the two-mile course at Vandergriff Park. Sutherland finished second in 11:22.28. "I was nervous that she was going to catch me, so I kept running hard," said Kitts, who was third at regionals and sixth at the state meet last year. "She looked a little stressed at the mile, but she got her wind back and went ahead with her race," Williams said of Kitts. "She's a very strong finisher." Poteet boys' depth comes through: Mesquite Poteet's boys had three top 10 finishers and won its sixth regional title in seven years, outlasting second-place Forney by 27 points. Coach Doug Robinson expected strong performances from his top two runners – Andy Ortiz, who was third, and Jorge Ziesk (sixth). Robinson said the difference was surprising finishes by Elias Murillo (eighth), normally an 800-meter runner, and Will Krogman (14th). "The guys had a great week of work going into it, and it was their day," Robinson said. Prosper senior picks up the pace: Prosper's Bailey Belvis was literally adjusting on the run as she tried to find the right pace in the 3A girls race. The defending champion was aiming for a 5:30 split at the mile mark. She was concerned when she came in 15 seconds slower. "As soon as I hit the mile, I thought that I better get going," said Belvis, who said she has committed to Missouri. "I tried to go as fast as I could until the finish." Belvis trailed Argyle's Colbea Harris by about three seconds at the mile mark. Belvis caught her with roughly 800 meters remaining and won by seven seconds in 11:14.51. "I never like to be that far behind," Belvis said, "but I knew that I could pick it up in the second mile. I was relaxed because I knew that I was running well." Overwhelming: Gabbie Corletto, Tyler Blacklock and Martha Romero all finished in less than 12 minutes for Forney, which won the 4A girls team title. It was the first time this season Forney had three under 12 minutes. Lutz leads Marcus to Region I title: Sophomore Craig Lutz won the 5A boys race in 14:59.04 to lead Flower Mound Marcus to the team title at the Region I meet in Lubbock. Lutz beat C.J. Brown of Southlake Carroll by 14 seconds. Lutz qualified for next Saturday's state meet in Round Rock and continued a brilliant start to his high school career. As a freshman, Lutz finished second at regionals and fourth at state. Colleyville Heritage's Alyssa Nielson ran 11:12.32 and won the 5A girls race by 11 seconds. With five runners placing in the top 19 – led by Tara Upshaw in third – Southlake Carroll won the 5A girls team title by 18 points over Plano West.
