Steve Halpin plans to retire as athletic director and football coach at Mesquite High School at the end of the school year because of health reasons, according to a news release from the Mesquite ISD.

"My years as head coach of the Skeeters have been the most rewarding and fulfilling of my life," he said. "It is hard to know when it is the right time to walk away from a career and a position that you love, but my family and I know that this is the right decision for us."

Halpin was 88-60 in 13 seasons as coach and led the school to the 2001 Class 5A Division I state title.
