Football NewsNow's their time to shine12:43 AM CDT on Friday, August 29, 2008The start of another high school football season gives a new wave of players the chance to make their names. Some are new to the varsity. Some have changed positions. Some are former backups getting a chance. All hope to help their teams go deep in the playoffs. The HSGameTime.com staff picked 11 area players we think could emerge as stars in 2008.
Bryan Barton Colleyville Heritage S The 5-11, 195-pound senior is intense and, coach Mike Fuller said, works so hard that he "plays faster than he really is."
Bobby Bush Flower Mound LB The 6-1, 215-pound senior has the speed of a smaller player and makes plays all over the field.
Aaron Burks Mansfield Timberview WR/S Burks (6-3, 180) had only seven catches for 79 yards last season but should get more chances in 2008. The senior, who has committed to Boise State, runs a 4.5 in the 40-yard dash.
Eric Davis Grand Prairie QB The 6-5, 195-pound senior, a free safety last season, takes over the controls of a newly installed spread offense. Seeing over pass rushers shouldn't be a problem.
Holt Hoetger Plano WR The junior has 4.39 speed and could be the deep threat to complement Kris Lott's possession receiver skills.
Lyndell Johnson Plano East S/WR The 6-3, 180-pound sophomore is a great athlete and could contribute on offense and defense for Plano East in tough District 8-5A.
John Mundy Grapevine QB The 6-1, 187-pound junior missed most of last season with a shoulder injury, but Grapevine likes his athleticism and leadership skills.
Chris Smith Bishop Lynch RB/WR Smith (5-9, 165) ran for 662 yards and averaged 5.7 yards per carry last season while backing up all-state running back Johnny Koepp. With Koepp gone, it's Smith's time to shine as a senior.
Luke Woodley Highland Park QB Woodley, a 6-2, 190-pound junior, will try to continue the Scots' recent string of passing success. A Highland Park QB has topped 2,500 yards passing in four of the last five seasons.
Adam Dingwell Rockwall QB: Dingwell, a junior, was an all-district tight end last season, but he'll shift to quarterback. Playing behind Braden Smith in 2007, Dingwell got into a game and was 2-for-2 for 37 yards.
Darius Terrell DeSoto WR: At 6-3, 180 pounds, the junior makes an excellent target on shorter routes and has the speed to get deep. Indications are DeSoto will be passing a lot more this season to take advantage of sophomore QB Ryan Polite. |
