Football NewsColleyville Heritage overcomes slow start, Irving MacArthur, 35-2005:16 PM CDT on Sunday, September 7, 2008IRVING – Colleyville Heritage's high-powered offense had trouble getting untracked in its nondistrict game against Irving MacArthur on Saturday. But once it did, it was hard to stop, as Heritage rolled to a 35-20 victory at Irving Schools Stadium. Heritage quarterback Steven Hill completed just one of his first 11 pass attempts, but he ended up throwing for 259 yards and two touchdowns. Week 1
Heritage (2-0), ranked No. 12 in SportsDay's Class 5A area poll, fell behind 7-0 and managed just one first down on its first five possessions before Hill and company got rolling. Heritage, which failed to convert on any of its first five third-down situations, converted all three during a 53-yard scoring drive midway through the second quarter that culminated in Bailey Crego's 4-yard touchdown run, tying the score at 7-7. Two plays later, Chase Barlow recovered a MacArthur fumble at the MacArthur 17. That set up a 9-yard Crego touchdown run that gave Heritage a 14-7 lead it took to halftime. MacArthur (0-2) was efficient in marching 74 yards in just six running plays on its first possession of the game. James Sims capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run that gave MacArthur a 7-0 lead. MacArthur managed just 31 yards of offense for the remainder of the half. Its offense looked better in the second half, but it couldn't keep pace with Heritage. MacArthur appeared to have Heritage stopped early in the fourth quarter following a third-down incompletion, but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty (taunting) kept the drive alive. Three plays later, Hill threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Foster to make it 21-7. Bryan Head added a 5-yard TD run on fourth-and-2 that gave Heritage a 28-7 lead. Sims finished with 128 rushing yards on 23 carries. |
