Wixon: Plano-Allen an intense affair Schedule: Saturday "It's a big step forward, but it's just the beginning," Lewisville safety Todd Spence said. "It's just a small step for what we want to do." Spence had a fumble recovery, blocked field goal and an interception, spearheading an impressive defensive effort against Coppell (3-1; 0-1), which entered averaging over 40 points a game. "Who would think you'd be able to stop Coppell's offense like that," Lewisville coach Steve Gaddis said. "We had no inkling. We hoped to slow them down. ... Didn't think we could do that, though." Spence had confidence that his defense, which returned nine starters from last year's 5-6 team, could rise to the challenge. "We knew we had it in us to do this," Spence said. "We came out and played like I knew we could play. I would put our defense against their offense 10 days out of the week, and I'd guarantee that we'd come out on top if we came out and played like we played tonight." While Coppell, No. 7 in the SportsDay's area Class 5A rankings, moved the ball well in the second half, Lewisville (3-1; 1-0) kept them out of the end zone. Coppell quarterback Dalton Williams threw for 341 yards, 232 yards after the half. Williams had four interceptions, though, one by Spence and another by Markus Henderson. "We knew all along Lewisville had a great defense," Coppell coach Bob Shipley said. "We struggled in the first half, but we started moving the ball better in the second. It was a couple of big plays, and a few bad breaks [that made the difference]." After jumping to a 13-0 halftime lead, Lewisville garnered only three first downs after half. A 52-yard touchdown pass from Stephen Stamey to Jamirie Howard was the only big play for Lewisville in the game, but it came at an opportune time, giving Lewisville a two-score lead. Lewisville starting running back Ivory Cook had a bruise that kept him out of the second half; reserve Darius Teamer filled in admirably, rushing for 63 yards on 23 carries. |
