PLANO – Wylie threw everything at Plano, including two blocked punts in the second half, but could not stop Plano when it counted most.
Trailing by one late in the fourth quarter, Plano drove 83 yards to score with 1:36 left and claim a heart-pounding 38-31 win at John Clark Field.
Even after Plano pulled ahead on Rex Burkhead's 6-yard touchdown run, it wasn't over. Wylie's final gasp came with 30 seconds left when Justin Thompson caught a pass over the middle on fourth-and-14. Thompson appeared to have the first down near midfield, but apparently tried to lateral to teammate Colby Harper.
Instead, the ball was fumbled backward and Plano took over to run out the final seconds.
Plano, ranked No. 2 in the state and the area, led for most of the game. But unlike in most of its wins, it could not rely on the running of Burkhead to ice the victory. Wylie's defense bottled up Burkhead, holding him to 44 yards on 21 carries.
Instead, quarterback Carson Meger passed for 293 yards and three touchdowns to lead Plano (6-0, 2-0 in District 8-5A).
Wylie (5-1, 1-1) got a similarly valiant performance from quarterback Jerod Monk, who rushed and passed for 299 yards and two touchdowns.
But it was two blocked punts by Nick Knott that sparked Wylie, ranked sixth in the area. The first led to a field goal that pulled Wylie within 30-25 early in the fourth quarter.
After the Wylie defense held Plano without a first down on its next possession, Knott blocked another punt. This time, teammate Nikita Whitlock returned it 10 yards for a touchdown and a 31-30 Wylie lead with 10:47 remaining.
Plano was forced to punt again, but got the ball back at its 17 with 3:01 left. Meger completed four of five passes on the drive, including a 38-yarder to Holt Hoetger that got Plano to the 10-yard line.
Burkhead covered the final yardage on two carries, then dove for the pylon on the two-point conversion to put Plano up by seven.
In the first half, Plano scored on back-to-back one-play drives to take a 20-7 lead.
On the first, Meger faked a handoff to Burkhead running left, then threw to the right to Robert Robinson, who sprinted 88 yards down the sideline for the score.
A blocked punt set up Plano's next one-play drive. Laron Kelly returned Luke Terrell's block to the Wylie 6-yard line. Burkhead scored from there, but the PAT missed to hold the lead to 13.
Wylie then launched a 12-play drive to draw within six. Monk bought time with a scramble and found Thompson alone in the back of the end zone for a 16-yard strike.
