Football NewsHebron rushes past Southlake Carroll, 44-2802:18 AM CDT on Saturday, November 1, 2008CARROLLTON Who said the spread offense was strictly for passing? Hebron dispelled that myth with several exclamation points. Hebron collected 484 rushing yards from its spread formation and left Hawk Stadium with a 44-28 victory against Southlake Carroll in a big District 6-5A game Friday night. Hebron (6-3, 4-0), which accounted for 310 rushing yards in the second half, clinched at least a share of the 6-5A championship. Carroll (6-2, 2-2) couldn't find an answer for the Hebron tandem of quarterback Justin Iwuji and running back Darius Staten. Iwuji finished with 273 rushing yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while Staten had 205 yards and four touchdowns on 24 rushes. "We had no idea we were going to come out and do this," Iwuji said. "We just left it on the field. " Week 9
Hebron finished with 634 total yards. Iwuji also threw for 150 yards on 10-of-18 passing. No team has gained more than 500 yards in the past four seasons. Carroll allowed 544 yards against Haltom in 2004. Staten rushed for a 21-yard score with 6:49 in the fourth quarter, as Hebron marched 98 yards on six plays to take a nine-point lead. On Carroll's ensuing drive, the Hebron defense forced Carroll to turn over the ball on the 1-yard line. Hebron then traveled 99 yards on only four plays, and Staten capped the drive with a 29-yard touchdown run. Carroll running back Tommy Avers finished with 205 yards and a touchdown. |
