Football NewsTexas Stadium among candidates to host future 5A Division I and II title games09:12 PM CST on Thursday, December 20, 2007The Euless Trinity football team will need a few tanks of gas to get to the site of Saturday's Class 5A Division I state title game. Its opponent, Converse Judson, will only need a few minutes to get to the Alamodome in San Antonio. Not exactly a neutral site. But if Trinity makes it to a state title game in the future, it might be the team making the short trip. This is the second year of a two-year agreement to hold the 5A Division I and II state title games at the Alamodome. UIL officials are seeking another two-year agreement, and Texas Stadium is one of the potential sites. There is no timeline for signing the next agreement, UIL assistant athletic director Mark Cousins said Thursday. But domed or partially domed venues are what the UIL is seeking, and that puts Texas Stadium in the running, along with Reliant Stadium in Houston. The UIL has stated a desire to have the games rotate among sites in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. The Cowboys' new stadium, which is set to open in 2009, would also fit the UIL's criteria for playing host to the game. The Cowboys' director of public relations, Rich Dalrymple, said the Cowboys have hosted more high school football games than any other NFL team. He added that the Cowboys would continue to welcome the opportunity to host high school football. "That philosophy will remain in place for next year at Texas Stadium and will be stronger when we move to the new stadium in 2009," Dalrymple said. At least one area football coach would welcome the Dallas area hosting the state title games. "It would be nice to get on a rotation and get it in the Metroplex, because this area has been pretty successful," Southlake Carroll coach Hal Wasson said. Wasson took over a Carroll team that beat Austin Westlake at the Alamodome last season to win the 5A Division I state title. Cedar Hill won the Division II title over Houston Cypress Falls to give Dallas-area teams a sweep of the first UIL-designated site for 5A championship games. Prior to 2006, the coaches of the teams participating in the 5A title games decided where each game would be played. Staff Writer Damon L. Sayles contributed to this report. |
