ADDISON – Jeff Wilson didn't need a tape measure to know he unleashed the throw of his life.
St. Mark's track coach John Turek bellowed as soon as Wilson's third attempt in the discus landed at the SPC spring track and field championships held Saturday at Greenhill.
The distance – 172 feet, 7 inches – bettered Wilson's previous best by nearly 20 feet. That effort enabled Wilson to sweep both throwing events and set up St. Mark's win in the team competition.
"He's very easy to hear," Wilson said of Turek. "The conditions today were perfect for the first time this season. It's been raining like clockwork, then today, the sun came out and the winds were coming in just right."
Wilson had a feeling it was going to be a good day. He said he snapped a toss of more than 180 feet in warm-ups. Wilson won the shot put with a personal best 50-6½. He scratched on a toss of 53 feet.
Greenhill sophomore dominates distance events: Greenhill sophomore Chelsey Sveinsson, fell short in her goal of setting a personal best in the 800-meter run. Her time of 2 minutes, 8.55 seconds was shy of her personal best (2:08.46) set last year. It was still enough to break her meet record (2:11.60) set last season.
Sveinsson also won the 3,200 (11:03.90) and the 1,600 (5:23.64). She held back in those events because she was saving her energy for the 800 and the 4 x 400 meter relay.
"I'm happy for PR-ing for the season [in the 800]," Sveinsson said. "I felt like it was coming, but I just couldn't get that time. That's OK. There will be a lot of other chances."
FW Country Day junior stays busy: Fort Worth Country Day junior Nicole Dory set school records and personal bests in winning the triple jump (38-7 ½ ), pole vault (10-6) and running anchor in the 4x100 relay (48.97). She also set a personal best in finishing third in the long jump (17-5¾).
