Chelsey Sveinsson, Greenhill, Soph.
Greenhill track coaches seem to have a pretty good idea about the talent level of sophomore Chelsey Sveinsson.
In an effort to find competition to push Sveinsson, Greenhill coaches had to turn to the Reebok Grand Prix in late May, a 1,500-meter race in which she was the only high school athlete among a field of 15 of the world's top professional runners.
"It was kind of intimidating during the race," Sveinsson said. "I was in the back, and that was a different experience. Usually, I'm in front."
No doubt. A year after breaking the 1,600 state record as a freshman, Sveinsson continued her dominance in 2009 en route to being named as SportsDay's girls track and field athlete of the year.
At the Southwest Preparatory Conference championships, Sveinsson won the 800 meters (2 minutes, 8.55 seconds), 1,600 (5:23.64) and 3,200 (11:03.90) and helped Greenhill finish third in the 4x400 relay (4:08.33).
In early April, Sveinsson won the 1,600 and 3,200 at the Texas Relays in Austin and was named the meet's most outstanding female athlete. Sveinsson won the 1,600 in 4:46.47 and the 3,200 in 10:12.11. Her winning times led the state and ranked second nationally this year.
Sveinsson's 800 winning time at the SPC meet of 2:08.55 also led the state and ranked 12th nationally.
"I had an overall good season," Sveinsson said. "I think about there are still people better than me out there, and I want to be the best and want to be at the top. I just keep looking ahead. I don't want to look back. It's been great."
