LAKE WORTH — Argyle knew it didn’t have any room for error heading into a showdown with Lake Worth on Tuesday night.
The Eagles had to face the Bullfrogs on their home field in a one-game playoff and didn’t make it out of town with their season intact after making a couple of key mistakes. Argyle left six men in scoring position and allowed the Bullfrogs to score the decisive run in a 3-2 win on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning in a Class 3A Region II area round game.
Lake Worth advanced to face Celina in the regional quarterfinals, while Argyle finished the season 20-11.
The game was tied 2-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before Lake Worth pitcher Albert Sanchez singled to left. Argyle pitcher Jake Katzen appeared as if he would work around the hit when he retired the next two hitters.
That was when the Eagles caught a bad break. John Hud-dleston beat out a bouncing ground ball for an infield single that put runners on the corners.
Katzen induced another ground ball from Lake Worth third baseman John Molina that should have gotten Argyle out of the inning, but the Eagles failed to make the play.
Courtesy runner Micah Abordonado scampered home on the error before San-chez closed out Argyle in the top of the seventh.
Lance Sut-ton doubled to center with one out, but was stranded when Sanchez shut the door and recorded the final two outs of the game.
Sanchez struck out 10 batters on the night and settled into a groove after the second inning, retiring the Eagles in order in three of the last four innings.
Argyle jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Sutton singled and scored on a double from Jay Gonzales. Sutton finished 2-for-3 on the night.
Lake Worth came back to score two runs when its leadoff batter reached in each of the first two innings. John Molina led off the second with a single up the middle and later scored to give Lake Worth a 2-1 lead.
Argyle tied it up in the third on a two-out, RBI double by Griffin, but didn’t threaten again until the top of the seventh when the Eagles had one last shot.
It was one of several opportunities Argyle failed to cash in.
