11/07/2009Football: Argyle hammers Celina ARGYLE -- The Argyle seniors celebrated in a big way on Friday. Argyle claimed the first undefeated regular season in school history and an outright District 9-3A title after its 29-14 win over Celina. The Eagles hope to ride Friday’s momentum into their bi-district playoff matchup with Paris on Thursday in McKinney. Argyle (10-0, 5-0) had to overcome a sloppy first half but secured the win with an offensively efficient second half. Four Eagle seniors led the scoring while the Argyle defense hung tough against a relentless Celina offense.Argyle 29, Celina 14 Stymied for 2½ quarters, Argyle's offense turned it on in the second half to cap a perfect regular season and capture the outright District 9-3A title with a 29-14 victory over Celina on Friday.10/31/2009Football: Defense leads Argyle past Gainesville GAINESVILLE -- Gainesville’s hopes of ending the 84-year history of its home field, Leeper Stadium, with a win Friday night were quickly snuffed out by the Argyle defense. “We knew they were going to be on a high to finish off this field,” Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers said. “This field has a lot of history. Our kids responded well.” The Argyle defense kept the game close while the offense spun its wheels early on the muddy playing surface. But midway through the first quarter, the Eagle offense got on track and never looked back on its way to a 38-14 victory in a District 9-3A game.Argyle 38, Gainesville 14 Austin Aune threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score for Argyle (9-0, 4-0 District 9-3A), the No. 1 team in SportsDay's Class 3A-2A area rankings and the No. 6 team in the 3A state rankings.10/24/2009Argyle 34, Sanger 7 Argyle allowed only 122 yards, and the No. 1 team in SportsDay's Class 3A-2A area rankings cruised to a 34-7 victory over Sanger on Friday night.Football: Eagles stay undefeated ARGYLE — The scoreboard said the Argyle offense exploded. But Friday’s win over Sanger was all about defense. The Argyle defense dominated the Sanger offense, nearly notching its first shutout of the season before the Eagles claimed a 34-7 District 9-3A homecoming victory. The victory improved the Eagles — the Associated Press’ No. 7 team in Class 3A — to 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in district.10/23/2009Football: Black whole ARGYLE -- The black flag flying at Eagle Stadium sends Argyle opponents an intimidating message. It features a skull and crossbones emblem with two eagles and the words “Argyle Defense” sprawled across the top. That defense represents the key reason the Eagles (7-0, 2-0) are sitting in the driver’s seat of District 9-3A, arguably the toughest 3A district in the state, with three games remaining. And to think, the flag probably wouldn’t have seen the light of day just two years ago. “I like that that’s what we’re looked at as now -- a defensive powerhouse,” senior linebacker Blake Dunham said. That wasn’t always the case. In fact, it was the complete opposite.10/21/2009Volleyball: District darlings When Ryan coach Cindy Williams first heard the news on Tuesday night, she wasn’t sure if it was true. It was one of those messages that someone heard from someone who heard from someone. The news was that Guyer had just lost to The Colony meaning the Lady Raiders, who had just swept Wichita Falls Rider, were in sole possession of first place in District 5-4A with two matches remaining. News travels fast. And the news was correct. “We found out through a text message and we weren’t sure how accurate it was,” Williams said. “But when we found out it was true, we were all pretty excited.”10/17/2009Argyle 35, Whitesboro 6 Argyle (7-0, 2-0 District 9-3A) scored 35 points in the first half and remained unbeaten. Argyle was coming off a win over defending Class 3A Division I state champion Prosper.Football: Eagles avoid letdown, crush Whitesboro WHITESBORO – Coming off of one of the biggest wins in school history last week, the possibility of a letdown game loomed large for the Eagles. After a three-and-out to open Friday’s District 9-3A tilt with Whitesboro, the potential for a letdown seemed even more real. And when Chad Hedlund’s ensuing punt gave the Bearcats the ball on the Argyle 39-yard line, a letdown performance appeared inevitable. But once the Argyle defense took the field, it quickly dismissed that possibility and paced the Eagles to a dominating 35-6 rout of the Bearcats on Friday night.10/10/2009Argyle edges Prosper, 17-14 ARGYLE – The tears welling up in Argyle coach Todd Rodgers' eyes told the story of Friday's anticipated matchup between Argyle and Prosper at Eagle Stadium.Football: Defense lifts Argyle to victory ARGYLE — The postgame tears welling up in Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers’ eyes told the story of Friday night’s highly anticipated matchup between Argyle and Prosper at Eagle Stadium. Argyle used its tenacious defense and conservative, ball-control offensive approach to beat the state’s seventh-ranked Class 3A team 17-14 and end Prosper’s 17-game winning streak that included a 3A Division I title in December.10/08/2009Football: Argyle set for critical 9-3A game Any district in the state that houses a state champion can claim to be a strong district. But what District 9-3A did last season is grounds for it being known as the toughest 3A district in Texas after Prosper won the Class 3A Division I state title, and Celina was a 3A Division II finalist.Notable games: Prosper at Argyle Prosper has allowed only 22 points all year. Meanwhile, its offense has averaged 33.6 per game.10/06/2009Volleyball: Block party for Argyle SANGER – Through two sets of Tuesday’s match against Sanger, it appeared as if Argyle would have an outright war on its hands. Then the tides turned. The Lady Eagles dropped the first set to Sanger, barely escaped with the second set and blew the gym doors off their hinges in the third and fourth set to remain perfect in District 9-3A play with a 19-25, 28-26, 25-12, 25-14 win over the Lady Indians.09/30/2009Cross country spotlight: Argyle's Colbea Harris 09/26/2009Football: Argyle pounds Bridgeport to stay unbeaten ARGYLE — Argyle backup quarterback Austin Aune was the Eagles’ equivalent of former Detroit Pistons guard Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson — instant offense. Aune threw four first-half touchdown passes to put Bridgeport in a deep hole, as the Eagles (5-0) completed an undefeated nondistrict slate with a 44-14 victory over the Bulls on Friday night.Argyle 44, Bridgeport 14 Backup quarterback Austin Aune threw five touchdown passes as Argyle defeated Bridgeport.09/19/2009Argyle 30, Decatur 6 Chad Hedlund threw for 109 yards and a touchdown, ran for 111 yards and kicked a 40-yard field goal to lead Arygle (4-0) past Decatur. Argyle is the No. 3 team in SportsDay's Class 3A-2A area rankings.Football: Eagles roll past Decatur DECATUR — After Friday’s stalwart defensive effort, the Argyle Eagles remain undefeated on the season. They ruined Decatur’s homecoming, 30-6, by keeping Decatur’s run game under wraps the entire night. “We’re fortunate to have a very fast and physical defensive line, and it allows our linebackers to get in there and make a lot of plays,” said Argyle head coach Todd Rodgers. “The kids just played good, solid fundamental defense, and we didn’t really have to do a lot of blitzing or stunting or anything like that.” The Eagles lined up and stuffed the run consistently with their four-man front. Argyle held Decatur’s run-heavy offense to just 104 yards on the ground on 36 carries. Jake Sizelove, Murphy Ellis and Jake Meeks each recorded sacks of Decatur quarterback Colton Parker.09/12/2009Football: Eagles pull away from Vernon in second half VERNON -- The Argyle Eagles could qualify for the playoffs in District 5-3A, if they were in it, as they collected their third straight victory over a 5-3A opponent Friday at Lion Stadium. Scotty Seiber rushed for 110 yards, and senior Chad Hedlund and sophomore Austin Aune combined for 176 yards passing in a 41-12 win over Vernon.09/05/2009Football: Argyle defense recovers from slow start in win ARGYLE — The Argyle Eagles may line up in the spread offense, but head coach Todd Rodgers calls their running game and defense “the backbone of the team.” The Eagles proved that during their 35-14 victory over Burkburnett on Friday night. When Argyle’s passing game sputtered, and the Bulldogs’ offense rumbled through the Eagle defense for a touchdown and a 14-3 lead late in the first quarter, the Eagles (2-0) made the adjustments required to score 32 unanswered points and render Burkburnett’s (1-1) offense nearly impotent in the final three quarters.Argyle 35, Burkburnett 14 Scotty Seiber rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown for Argyle (2-0), the No. 4 team in SportsDay's Class 3A-2A area rankings.
