LUBBOCK – It was fitting that the Arlington Bowie girls closed the Class 5A Region I track and field meet by winning the 4x400 relay.
The Lady Vols had been represented well throughout the meet and won their second regional title, the first coming in 2005.
"We've put it all together all year," coach Doris Grooms said. "We knew that this was a goal that we could accomplish. They've worked hard all year in practice."
Bowie took second in the 4x100 and first in the 4x200. Senior Briony Miller won the 400. The team scored 85 points.
Sprint sweep: The vibrant smile on Chris Bain's face was almost as impressive as his performance in the 100 and 200.
The Justin Northwest junior won both events, with a 100 time of 10.60 seconds and a 200 mark of 21.80.
"I'm kind of shocked," he said.
Arlington's Brandon Lewis claimed silver in the 100 with a 10.69.
Back to state: Hurst L.D. Bell shot putter Zaquita McClanahan finished third at state in 2008.
After capturing first on Saturday with a put of 41-10 ½ , she's hoping the regional gold will soon turn into state gold. "Hopefully I'll win this year," she said.
Haltom's Keuna Flax finished second to qualify for state with a mark of 41-7 ¾ .
Briefly: Arlington freshman Orlene Parris outdueled Lubbock Coronado's Ashlyn Stewart to win the high jump at 5-5. ... Keller Fossil Ridge's Clinton Collins won the 400 with a 47.52. ... Southlake Carroll's C.J. Brown dominated the field in the mile with a 4:14.16, a full four seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. ... Euless Trinity's Bobby Brown finished second in the long jump, clearing 22-4. ... Arlington's Pamela Vinson won the 200 with a 24.19. ... Southlake Carroll pole vaulter Kimberly Parr finished second with a 10-6 mark.
