GARLAND – Arlington Bowie scored touchdowns on its first four possessions Friday and cruised to a 35-6 victory over South Garland at Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
Bowie quarterback Christian Matthews passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to key the rout for Bowie (2-0).
"I was a little worried about a letdown after last week, but we really came out and executed," said Bowie coach Kenny Perry, whose team defeated Trotwood-Madison (Ohio) 48-0 last week. "We've got a lot of weapons on offense, and when we play like that on defense we're tough. Our defense was outstanding tonight."
Matthews came out firing, completing six of his first seven passes, including a quick strike down the middle to wide receiver Trae Hawkins for a 17-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. Matthews, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior, hurt South Garland with his legs on the next two drives, scoring on a 43-yard scramble and a 3-yard dive.
"Whenever you score on a long run like that, it really gets your adrenaline going," Matthews said. "We kind of relaxed a little bit after we got up 28-0. We can't get in the habit of doing that because that's how teams come back on you."
Matthews' backup, Deric Davis, also got into the act as he connected with Jonathan Gazaille on a slant for a 7-yard touchdown with 5:01 to play in the half.
Bowie's defense nearly pitched a consecutive shutout, but Damien Gomez hit Darnell Smith for an 11-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.
