DUNCANVILLE Coppell's high-powered offense rumbled through Duncanville
with little difficulty en route to a 48-14 victory Friday night at
Panther Stadium.
The dominating performance was made easier by the three turnovers
Coppell converted into touchdowns.
The tone was set on the opening kickoff, as Coppell senior defensive
back Devin Smith, after receiving a reverse handoff from senior receiver
Trevor Trudell, ran the ball back 81 yards.
Coppell had a first-and-goal at the Duncanville 9 just as people were
still filing into their seats.
Coppell grabbed a 7-0 lead just 63 seconds into the game on a rushing
touchdown by Trudell and the first of five extra point kicks by senior
Griffin Mobley.
Duncanville, however, was determined to make a game of it in the early
going and responded with some flair of its own.
Junior receiver Jordan Selexman made a sensational 29-yard grab in the
middle of the field to save Duncanville's drive on third down. Senior
fullback Dajon Leto reached the end zone moments later to tie the score,
7-7.
But Coppell turned it into a blowout – and in a hurry – as in the
hurry-up offense it has mastered in its first two games.
Duncanville learned its lesson, kicking away from Smith on the ensuing
kickoff.
It didn't matter as Coppell caught Duncanville out of position and took
advantage with a 61-yard hookup from Dalton Williams to Trudell that
allowed it to take a 14-7 lead.
Coppell owned a 24-point advantage by the end of the first half.
Barely a minute into the third quarter, Coppell's Marlin Terrell ran
back a fumble 13 yards for another touchdown.
Duncanville quarterback Larry Miller found junior receiver Gabriel
Castillo deep down the middle of the field for a 65-yard score in the
third quarter.
