Arlington Bowie assistant coach Kendall Miller is following in his father's footsteps as a head football coach in the Dallas ISD.
Miller has been hired as South Oak Cliff's football coach after spending last season as Bowie's running backs coach. Miller, 33, is replacing Chris Gilbert, who went 20-15 in three seasons at SOC.
Miller's Dallas ISD roots run deep. His father, Ocell Miller, spent six seasons as Samuell's head coach before retiring in 1997. Ocell also served as Roosevelt's defensive coordinator for almost 20 seasons in the 1970s and '80s.
Kendall Miller is a 1993 Skyline graduate and was Lincoln's offensive coordinator in 2006.
"I've grown up in it. Since I was about 7 years old, I was the ball boy on the sidelines," Miller said. "It's been a part of me and my family. That's all I've ever known on Friday nights was high school football games."
Miller spent seven seasons as an assistant at Arlington Sam Houston, where he served as the offensive coordinator for three years. Miller was an assistant at Arlington Seguin in 2007 before coming to Bowie last year.
Miller was an all-district wide receiver as a junior and senior at Skyline, where he also played baseball and basketball. Miller went on to play baseball at Tarleton State.
Miller, who officially starts at SOC on Monday, said he'll run a spread offense next season. This is Miller's first head coaching job.
"I know I'm only 33 years old and still ahead of the curve in a lot of ways. It's been something that I knew I would do. I'm real excited," Miller said. "You always want to be in a situation where you can win some games, and I think we can definitely do that at SOC."
