DESOTO – Thanks to a cool sophomore quarterback with an unusual first name, Duncanville shed a couple of losing streaks.
With Divan (pronounced Devin) Ealy running the show, Duncanville beat neighborhood rival DeSoto, 27-20, on Friday night at Eagle Stadium.
Duncanville (1-3) won for the first time under coach Jeff Dicus and ended a four-year losing streak to DeSoto (1-3), No. 19 in SportsDay's Class 5A area rankings.
With Ealy rushing for 73 yards in the first half and passing for 96 (hitting 7-of-9 passes), Duncanville cruised to a 20-0 intermission lead.
But DeSoto, held to one touchdown in its last eight quarters, rallied in the second half to tie, 20-20, on a 4-yard run by Courtney Webb and a conversion run by sophomore quarterback Ryan Polite midway through the fourth quarter.
Duncanville was held without a first down through the first 18 minutes of the second half until Ealy came up with the key plays to send his team on a 58-yard drive that regained the lead for good. Ealy completed passes of 18 yards to Darrious Polk and 15 yards to Chad Taylor. Ealy slipped through the DeSoto defense for the winning touchdown on a 25-yard run with 4:32 left.
Ealy was making just his second start, replacing senior Larry Miller, who suffered a broken ankle in the Week 1 loss to Garland and is out for the season.
DeSoto had one touchdown called back by penalty and failed to score after reaching the Duncanville 4 late in the first half. The passing of Polite and a 58-yard run by Byron Hudson helped DeSoto get back in the game.
