When Flower Mound Marcus looks back at Saturday's loss to Katy, third-quarter mishaps will stick out.
Marcus (2-2) gained 244 of its 305 total yards in the second half, but defending Class 5A Champion Katy (1-2) held on, 17-14, in a non-district contest at Waco ISD Stadium.
Marcus marched to the Katy 9-yard line on the opening drive of the second half. Marcus fumbled on second-and-goal, and Katy recovered at its 23.
Katy went 3-and-out. Marcus drove to the Katy 29-yard line but turned the ball over on downs with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter.
Katy marched 71 yards on eight plays and went ahead, 17-0, with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Chris Roberson. Vernon Jeffries had runs of 23 and 28 yards on the drive.
Marcus marched 80 yards in just seven plays and cut the deficit to 17-7 with 10:13 remaining in the game when quarterback Brad L'Huillier passed 42 yards to Joel Free.
Marcus stopped Katy with 2:14 remaining at the Marcus 29. Six plays later, L'Huillier and Free connected on a 20-yard score as Marcus cut the deficit to 17-14 with 1:25 remaining.
Katy recovered Marcus' onside kick at its 49.
Marcus could not stop running back Michael Webber on second-and-5. Webber's 7-yard gain picked up a first down and seal Katy's victory.
