PLANO – Shelby Hedrick scattered seven hits and struck out four, and seven Forney batters had at least one hit as Forney beat Frisco Wakeland, 10-2, in Game 1 of a best-of-three Class 4A Region II semifinals series at Plano West.
Forney (34-6) capitalized on two errors in the top of the third inning to open the scoring. Caitlin Everett opened the inning with an infield single, moving to second on a throwing error. After Kallan Thompson reached on a fielding error and Hillary Steed walked to load the bases, Shelby Brogdon grounded out to score Everett.
Ashley McCarroll followed with a two-run double to left, scoring later on a single by Taylor Schoblocher.
Wakeland ace Alexis Cantu, who came into the game with 23 wins and 286 strikeouts, struggled to get ahead of hitters for most of the game.
Cantu reached full counts on eight batters, striking out four and walking four in 5 2/3 innings. She left the game after surrendering a two-run triple to Thompson.
Trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Wakeland (29-6) put some pressure on Hedrick, who had retired 12 consecutive batters.
Kelci Garza hit an RBI single, scoring Taylor Redmond. But, with the bases loaded, Hedrick ended the inning, inducing a pop out to left.
McCarroll went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, and Everett went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and a stolen base.
Game 2 will be at 7:30 today, with Game 3, if necessary, on Saturday.
