South Garland coach Mickey Moss said he is pleased to walk away with a win against Plano West, no matter how small the margin of victory.
South Garland led Plano West, 28-7, entering the fourth quarter, but two Plano West touchdowns closed the gap to 28-21 with 1:33 left before a failed onside kick attempt sealed the game.
"In those situations, you're trying to avoid the quick score," Moss said. "We just played a little bit too safe."
South Garland (1-1) will play South Grand Prairie (0-2) on Friday night at Garland's Homer B. Johnson Stadium.
