Alicia Vasquez pitched a two-hit shutout, and Amanda Thomas was 2-for-4 with a home run as Mesquite Horn won Game 1 of a best-of-3 series.

Garland reached the state tournament each of the last four seasons, but it will have to beat the state's 10th-ranked 5A team twice today to have a chance to extend that streak. Courtney Moore was also 2-for-4 and drove in a run for Mesquite Horn.
