Garland NewsGarland softball falls a little short11:49 PM CDT on Friday, May 30, 2008AUSTIN – Pitcher Tomi Garrison wiped her tears away and tried to force a smile as she took the last team picture in her Garland career. Moments earlier, Austin Bowie had shattered Garland's dream of a third straight state championship with a 1-0 win in Friday's semifinal in front of a partisan crowd at McCombs Field. But Garrison tried to focus on her team's achievements during her career: two titles in four trips to the state tournament. "We won back-to-back state championships," Garrison said. "A lot of people can't say that." Garrison (25-4) allowed five hits and struck out four. But a Garland error with two outs in the fifth inning allowed Bowie to score the winning run. Garland, the 10-5A district champs, finished the season 31-6-2. "At the beginning of the season, no one thought we would be here," coach Cindy Mosteller said. "Our kids did a great job. I'm really proud of them." Garrison, a Sam Houston signee, finished her high school career with a 96-12 record. "I'll miss playing with her a lot," shortstop Rose Stubbs said. "She's amazing. Hopefully, I'll get to play with her or against her in college." In the fifth inning, Bowie second baseman Candace Velasquez led off with a single. Garrison then threw to second for a forceout when the next batter, Maggie Barron, bunted. But Bowie followed with another bunt that got Barron over to second with two outs. Bowie outfielder Andrea Porter, who was 3-for-3, then reached on a slow grounder to second base, and Barron was able to scamper home on an errant throw to first. That run was enough for Bowie pitcher Blaire Luna (23-2), who avenged the team's loss to Garland in the state semifinals last season. Luna allowed three hits and struck out 11. |
