AUSTIN – Stephanie Peace hit an RBI double with two outs in the sixth inning to score Many Ogle, lifting New Braunfels Canyon to a 1-0 win over Mesquite Poteet in the UIL Class 4A softball state semifinal.
New Braunfels Canyon (37-3) pitcher Sara Mireles worked seven innings, striking out four. Mireles started the game ending double play when she snagged a line drive off the bat of Jordan Wright and spun to catch the Pirates' runner off second base.
Peace later delivered a long line drive that sailed just beyond the grasp of Pirate center fielder Lindsey Barsoum, allowing Ogle to score the only run of the game.
Designated hitter Kate Foster of Mesquite Poteet had two of the Pirates' three hits. Earlier in the day Foster won the silver medal in the UIL Class 4A girls discus competition at the state track meet across the street.
Bradie Baker of Mesquite Poteet (35-10-1) threw for six innings, scattering five hits and striking out four for the loss.
The Cougarettes will face Angleton in a Class 4A championship game.
