Mesquite Poteet's top returning receiver, Josh Preston, caught just six passes last year. Quarterback Andrew Maddox was a safety last year.
But Poteet coach Charles Hesse isn't worried. His team is learning by doing.
"Success comes with consistently doing things correctly," Hesse said. "Each game we have and success in each play we run teaches us something else."
Poteet did a lot of things correctly during the 18-14 win over Midlothian, especially Maddox, who rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Hesse said he is becoming more hands-off, especially when it comes to his first-year quarterback.
"If he can run it, let him run it," Hesse said. "I don't want to over-coach. Obviously we don't really want our quarterback to carry 21 times, but we only have two starters back on the field when we started last week. So it was all brand new to us."
