Mesquite rebounded from an 0-3 start to win its last two games, and coach Steve Halpin said the defense has been the difference.
"They've played tough and really they haven't given up any big plays at all," Halpin said. "We've evolved from a three-man front to a four-man front. We're adjusting, and we're getting a little bit more pressure."
During its three-game losing streak, Mesquite allowed an average of 30 points and 340.6 yards per game. In the last two games, the defense has allowed just three points and 119.5 yards per game.
Senior linebacker Marquis Wadley said Mesquite has a practice technique that helps its defenders get to the football.
"We have two whistles in practice," Wadley said. "On the first whistle, you just get to the ball and do your job. But on the second whistle, everyone gets to the ball, no matter where you are."
