MESQUITE – Last season, Kenny Davis was a top cornerback for West
Mesquite.
This season, coach Mike Overton was dedicated to making the senior the
No. 1 running back for his squad.
On Friday night, Davis was all over the field, no matter what position
he played.
Davis rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown in the first half, and
intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter to lead West Mesquite past
Frisco, 21-7 at Mesquite's Memorial Stadium.
Davis carried the ball 13 times in the first half, including rushes of
41 and 29 yards, using his speed to get outside of Frisco defenders and
into the secondary on multiple occasions. Davis' 22-yard touchdown run
in the second quarter gave West Mesquite a lead it never surrendered.
But in the second half, Davis carried just three times and spent time at
cornerback. The switch paid off for West Mesquite, as he intercepted two
passes from Frisco quarterback Gavin Gray late in the fourth quarter to
seal the game.
"One of our corners got hurt, and I had to step in," Davis said. "The
team needed me on defense, and I had to do it."
West Mesquite's rushing attack improved from its season opener, when
Davis rushed for just 98 yards in a 41-34 loss to Corsicana on Aug. 31.
"We dedicated ourselves to going back to the running game during the
off-week," Overton said. "We want to be a more run-oriented team, and we
wanted to kill some clock, keep their offense off the field. We did that
tonight."
But Overton interrupted his post-game praise for Davis' contribution to
the running game to talk about his play on the other side of the ball."I
can't say enough about what he did on defense," Overton said. "We knew
he could do it for us. I can't say enough about the entire secondary."
As a team, West Mesquite gained 355 total yards, while the defense
allowed just 169 to Frisco. Running back Joshua Hill led Frisco with 89
yards rushing.
After the game, a visibly exhausted Davis took off his shoulder pads,
revealing a sweat-covered undershirt from his work on the field.
"I'm going to sleep real good tonight," Davis said.
