ROUND ROCK, Texas - Leslie Shurtleff scored twice to lead Southlake Carroll to a 2-1 victory against Plano East in the Class 5A girls soccer final Saturday at Round Rock ISD Stadium.
Shurtleff got her first score 16 minutes into the game on a shot from 20 yards. In the second half, she floated in a free kick from 40 yards against the wind with 24 minutes remaining that gave Carroll a 2-0 lead. Shurtleff was named the championship game MVP.
Plano East cut the lead in half when Carolyn Polcari converted a free kick from 20 yards at the 19:05 mark. Polcari nearly got the equalizer two times in the final three minutes. Her free kick from the top of the penalty area hit the cross bar and her shot from about 10 yards was saved by Carroll’s Caitlin Schneider with one second remaining.
Carroll (24-4-4) win its first girls soccer state championship in three trips to the state tournament. Plano East, making its state tournament debut, finished at 24-4-3.
