FLOWER MOUND —Collin Ashley, making a transition to receiver after winning district co-MVP honors as a cornerback, had nine catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns as Flower Mound upset Plano East, 40-8, in the season opener for both teams.
Quarterback Brandon Colquitt threw for 275 yards and four scores, and James Kelly added 99 yards receiving and a touchdown, as Flower Mound racked up 22 first downs. Despite returning six starters on offense, Plano East, ranked no. 15 in SportsDays Class 5-A, struggled to maintain any offensive continuity, having seven possessions where they failed to gain a first down.
A 78-yard touchdown run by Toben Opurum gave Plano East a 8-7 lead with 7:05 remaining in the first quarter. Flower Mound regained the lead less than four minutes later, capitalizing on a fumble deep in Plano East territory with a 22-yard touchdown pass from Colquitt to Ashley. A touchdown catch by Kelly and a 30-yard field goal by Zach Robinson extended Flower Mound's lead to 24-8 by halftime.
Plano East, which had six first downs for the game, had only 45 more yards total offense after Opurum’s run. Sebastian Phenix, in his first game as quarterback was 7-of-20 for 23 yards. Opurum finished with 92 yards on five carries. Plano East’s losing streak rose to five, after starting the 2007 season 6-0.
