In his first game of the season, Kyle Van de Ven rushed for 264 yards and two touchdowns to lead Jesuit (2-3, 1-0) to a 40-27 win in its District 8-5A opener over Plano East (0-6, 0-2).
Having missed Jesuit's first four games with an injury, Van de Ven carried 33 times. On Jesuit's first play from scrimmage, Van de Ven broke several tackles and raced 40 yards to set up a 5-yard touchdown reception by Brian Wetzel.
Wetzel later recovered a fumbled punt, setting up a Nick Tausch field goal.
After spotting Jesuit a 17-0 lead, Plano East used its big-play offense to get back into the game, scoring on consecutive drives despite facing third-and-25 and third-and-32 situations. Rodney Thompson caught a 56-yard touchdown pass on the third-and-25, and the third-and-32 resulted in a 43-yard gain that set up a Plano East score that cut its deficit to 17-14.
Nick Tausch kicked four field goals, including two in the fourth quarter, one from 51 yards out.
