Plano NewsTireless arm delivers Mesquite softball upset12:04 AM CDT on Sunday, May 4, 2008WYLIE – After throwing both games of a doubleheader Friday, Mesquite's only pitcher, Nikki Jordan, faced Plano, one of the best hitting teams in the area, for a third time Saturday. "I wasn't worried about my arm," Jordan said. "I was worried they were going to start getting used to me." But Plano never did. Mesquite (26-9) pulled the biggest upset of the playoffs so far with an 8-2 victory over the No. 9 team in the state in Game 3 of the second round. Mesquite, the second-place team in District 12-5A, faces Plano East in the Region II quarterfinals. Jordan pitched 21 innings and did not give up more than three runs in any of the games. On Saturday, she allowed 10 hits, but always found a way to keep Plano (31-6) from a big inning. Instead, Mesquite came up with a four-run second inning to take a 5-0 lead, forcing a Plano pitching change. Callie Willeford, Ashlee Faries and Emily Burleigh each had RBI singles. Heather Farquhar extended Mesquite's lead to 7-1 with a two-run single in the fifth. Plano opened the seventh with two singles, but Jordan retired the next three batters. After the game, Mesquite players rushed to get ready for Saturday night's senior prom. |
