PLANO – A slow-starting Plano offense revved up in the second half for a 33-7 win over Irving MacArthur.
Carson Meger passed for 194 yards and three touchdowns to give Jaydon McCullough a win in his Plano head coaching debut.
McCullough was a longtime assistant under former coach Gerald Brence, who's now the athletic director, and played at Plano under the legendary Tom Kimbrough.
Plano, ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 5A, was held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed, 7-5, midway through the second. MacArthur quarterback Michael Brooks broke an 82-yard touchdown run to put Plano behind.
Brooks kept on an option play around the right side and sprinted past the Plano secondary for the score.
However, the touchdown was the only first down for MacArthur, ranked No. 19 in the area, until the fourth quarter.
Plano's defense, which returned just two starters, gave the offense time to find a rhythm, starting with Meger's 18-yard touchdown lob to Kris Lott late in the first half.
Meger hooked up with Holt Hoetger for touchdowns of 15 and 37 yards in the second half. Hoetger, who finished with four catches for 93 yards, had another 33-yard reception in the fourth quarter to set up Rex Burkhead's 17-yard touchdown run.
MacArthur was held to 153 yards and three first downs. A fumbled snap gave Plano a safety and another botched snap put the ball at the MacArthur five, setting up Plano's first touchdown.
