Josh Rake's double in the top of the fifth inning Tuesday drove home the winning run in Southlake Carroll's 4-3 victory over Plano West in a one-game Class 5A area-round playoff at Colleyville Heritage.
Andrew LaCombe hit a two-run homer for Carroll (16-12-1) in the rematch of last year's 5A state title game, which Plano West won. Carroll got six strong innings from starter Thomas Altimont, and Ronnie Mitchell pitched a scoreless seventh for the save.
Plano West grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but LaCombe tied the score with a homer to left center in the third. Rake's game-winning RBI in the fifth knocked out Plano West starter Andrew Blum.
In this round of the playoffs, teams had to play a one-game playoff rather than having the option for a best-of-3 series like in other rounds. In other second-round games:
