IRVING – Prosper quarterback Hunter Nix couldn't resist calling signals one last time when photographers crowded around for a picture of the new Class 3A Division I state champions.
"OK, guys," Nix said to his teammates as he clutched a side of the trophy. "State champs on three – one, two three: state champs!"
Prosper defeated Waco La Vega, 17-10, to win the school's first state football title Saturday at Texas Stadium.
With Nix leading the attack, Prosper scored the game's final 17 points, including two touchdowns in the second half.
"We're a second-half team," Nix said, "so just being down seven at half was big for us."
Prosper gained 139 of its 167 rushing yards in the second half, when its offensive line took control.
Nix tied the score on a 2-yard run in the final three minutes of the third quarter, then led Prosper (14-1) on a seven-play, 72-yard drive for the winning touchdown, a 14-yard run by Bryan Monroe with three minutes left.
La Vega (12-3), which jumped to a 10-0 lead on its first two possessions, moved to the Prosper 30 on its final possession, but two pass breakups by defensive back Rusty Neely sealed it.
"The receiver thought he was open," a smiling Neely said. "But he wasn't."
Prosper coach Kent Scott said the state title hadn't soaked in yet "but I bet it will."
