RICHARDSON – Richardson Berkner kept giving Wylie gifts, and Wylie was happy to accept.
"It's part of the game, but if you make mistakes, you're done," Wylie quarterback Jerod Monk said.
After struggling in the first half, Wylie rallied for 28 unanswered points, including 14 off turnovers, to win 42-20 on Friday night at Wildcat-Ram Stadium.
After Wylie took its first lead of the game on a 41-yard touchdown run by Monk, Berkner fumbled on its first play on its next possession, giving Wylie the ball on the Berkner 21. Three plays later, Monk found wide receiver Christopher Nalley in the back of the end zone.
Berkner fumbled again on its next offensive play, and defensive back Daniel Jordan ran the ball in for another Wylie score.
"I'm very pleased with the defense tonight," Wylie coach Bill Howard said. "We played aggressive and forced turnovers, and we capitalized on a few mistakes."
The second half was in stark contrast to the first, in which both offenses struggled. The highlight of the first half came as time expired, when Berkner defensive back Josh Johnson intercepted Monk and took it 27 yards for a touchdown to give Berkner a 14-7 lead.
"We came out a little tight at the beginning," Monk said. "Coach just told us to focus up and start doing things right."
But Berkner's offense began to click in the second half, tying the score on a 39-yard touchdown run by running back Nicholas Duvall.
Johnson shined for Berkner on both sides of the ball, with two interceptions and 82 yards rushing, including a touchdown, despite playing with a large cast on his left arm.
The Wylie defense held Berkner to 230 total yards and forced three turnovers. It also held two Berkner quarterbacks, Lawrence Williams and Nick Thomas, without a completion, with the two finishing 0 for 10 with an interception.
Monk finished with 169 yards passing and a touchdown, and 83 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
