WYLIE – Mesquite Poteet's commitment to defense made the difference Friday in its 2-0 victory against Rockwall in Game 2 of a best-of-3 Class 4A Region II semifinal series. A night after logging three errors, Poteet played error free and scored two unearned runs in the fifth inning to set up a decisive third game at noon today in Wylie.
"We made some uncharacteristic errors," Poteet coach Joseph Huber said of Thursday's game. "Rockwall historically has a lot of slappers, and they have five in this year's lineup. We made some adjustments, and I thought we did a good job versus those kids tonight."
Poteet (32-8-1) worked out of trouble several times to maintain the shutout. Rockwall (28-12) left eight runners on base, including three in the third inning. Rockwall's leadoff hitter reached in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, and two of those were left stranded in scoring position.
Bradie Baker earned the victory, allowing eight hits and striking out three.
"We've been getting used to getting runners on and playing perfect D with runners on," right fielder Lindsey Barsoum said Poteet's practices. "We're very confident with Bradie in the circle."
Barsoum singled to left, scoring Carly Taylor for the first run. Reachelle Spieker singled in Mackenzie Middlebrook for the second run. The inning was kept alive following a two-out error on a grounder at third base.
