Marquise Goodwin, Rowlett, Sr.
Rowlett senior Marquise Goodwin scored enough points at the state meet that he would have finished third by himself in the Class 5A team standings.
He won state titles in the long jump (26 feet, 4 ¾ inches), triple jump (50-5 ¾ ) and as part of Rowlett's 4x100 relay (40.86). He finished second in the 100 (10.24 seconds) and 200 meters (21.24). Goodwin accounted for 41 of Rowlett's 66 points as the Eagles claimed a second consecutive 5A title.
Goodwin's accomplishments helped him garner SportsDay's boys track and field athlete of the year award for a second consecutive year.
"Of course we'll remember what we've done individually," Goodwin said, "but the big picture everybody is going to look at is the team titles."
Perhaps, but Goodwin put on a show at the state track meet never seen before by an athlete in Texas' highest classification.
Goodwin's 41 points were the most ever by an athlete above Class 2A at the state meet. In the modern era of the state meet (after 1945, when the current scoring format was implemented), only two other athletes have scored more points than Goodwin: Class 2A Refugio's Toya Jones in 1993 (45) and 1994 (44) and Class B Meridian's Frank Pollard in 1976 (42).
Now the next step comes in Goodwin's journey. He's signed a track and field scholarship with Texas, but he also plans to play slot receiver for the Longhorns this fall.
Of course, to succeed at the college level, Goodwin will have to compete in fewer events. Goodwin said he'd focus his attention on the long jump – his best event – and the 100.
Goodwin leaves high school with 12 state medals – seven gold – and two team championships.
"Just knowing that I was one of the few people who have done that, it's pretty special" Goodwin said. "It's just a blessing."
