Is Coppell the only area baseball team with legitimate UIL title hopes? Coppell certainly ran away with the District 6-5A title. Zak Hermans, Sam Swinton and Michael Apple give Coppell plenty of pitching depth. Flower Mound and Flower Mound Marcus, Plano and Plano West aren't ranked as high, but they are teams to be reckoned with. Plano West steamrolled its way through the postseason last year and is the defending Class 5A champion.
How far can W.T. White's 10 players go? The compressed baseball schedule won't do W.T. White any favors. It's the school's 27th straight playoff berth, but there are only 10 players on the roster. Reid Scoggins can't pitch every game. The other nine better be ready to pitch if necessary.
Rockwall or Rockwall-Heath? Once again, baseball is hot on the east side of Lake Ray Hubbard. Rockwall's Travis Ballew is 9-0 with a 1.21 ERA. Rockwall-Heath's James Baune is 7-1 with a 1.16 ERA. Both teams were neck and neck down the stretch in the District 10-4A race, and both will be tough to beat in the postseason.
Colton Cain, Waxahachie: Cain is one of the best players in the nation. The left-hander was 6-1 with a 1.30 ERA. He also drove in 32 runs. He's signed with Texas but should be a high draft pick in June.
Brad Kottman, Denton Guyer: Guyer's ace is 9-0 with 68 strikeouts. He's also hitting .465 with 10 doubles and 22 RBIs.
Matt Lipka, McKinney: The same speed Lipka uses as a standout receiver is what helps him in the outfield. He's played for the Team USA junior team and is batting .370.
Max Muncy, Keller: The infielder was one of the stars in Baylor's recent recruiting class. He's hitting .458 with 23 RBIs. Muncy can also pitch in a pinch.
Joee Reyna, Cedar Hill: The junior will be all over Plano's scouting report in bi-district play. He has hit .600 with eight doubles and three triples.
Forney vs. Waxahachie: Forney has been wildly inconsistent, but a fresh start will be welcome for Corey Blackmon and Kyle Jeffrey.
McKinney vs. Highland Park: The District 9-4A champ should have a slight edge over Highland Park, which lost to Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath in the last three weeks.
South Grand Prairie vs. Allen: Jesus Mendoza heads into the postseason 7-0. But Allen's Alex Yarbrough has a .438 average with six triples.
Southlake Carroll vs. Colleyville Heritage: Nothing like a friendly Northeast Tarrant County rivalry to start things off. Carroll won, 8-7, when they met in April.
Duncanville: Few baseball teams have as much tradition as Duncanville. Jorge Rodriguez and Noel Ibarra shoulder a lot of pressure, but magical things have happened before.
Mesquite Poteet: That 18-game winning streak looked awfully nice. But Poteet will enter the playoffs with recent losses to Bishop Lynch, Plano West and Flower Mound Marcus.
Sachse: The offense is explosive, but the pitching is inconsistent. Daniel Falls has 50 strikeouts and a 1.92 ERA. Matt Harper is 6-2 with a 3.90 ERA.
Mansfield: Led by Taylor Mabra (.538) and Andrew Kautz (6-1, 1.78 ERA), Mansfield went 11-0 in district play. The school has lost only once since March 10.
Plano: All eyes will be on defending state champion Plano West. But don't lose sight of Plano, which has won four of its last five. Jamen Parten is 7-1 with a 0.70 ERA and 80 strikeouts.
Rowlett: Four hitters have batting averages hovering around .400. Brett Byrum is 5-0 in 27 innings with a 0.52 ERA.
