Boys Soccer NewsFlower Mound Marcus boys cruise to 5A state soccer title12:02 AM CDT on Sunday, April 13, 2008ROUND ROCK, Texas – Winning this championship was a relative breeze for Flower Mound Marcus. UIL Soccer Championships Hockey Marcus (26-3-3) scored twice in the first half with a stiff wind at its back and dominated possession throughout on its way a 3-0 victory against Klein on Saturday at Round Rock ISD Stadium for its second straight boys Class 5A title. Senior midfielder Sam Garza didn't score or have an assist, but he drew two or three defenders most times he touched the ball, which opened things up for his teammates. Senior forward Eric Przybysz had a goal and assist, and Josh Mensah and Eric Frazier also scored. Garza was named the championship game MVP. "We have an unbelievable team," Garza said. "We hit a couple of rough spots during the season, but that never stopped us. We came out on fire. We took it to Klein." Garza was one of only two returning starters from Marcus' 30-0 team that topped Plano West in a shootout to win last year's state championship. "We knew it was going to be difficult," Marcus coach John Gall said. "But we have a deep program. We have so much to live up to. Nobody in the state deserves this more than [my players] do. I'm so proud of them." Klein (20-3-2) never generated a sustained attack, even with the wind. It was the final game for Klein coach Allen Baker, who is retiring atfer 656 wins in 31 seasons. |
