Softball NewsBrock wins 2A softball title11:03 PM CDT on Saturday, June 6, 2009AUSTIN – Linsey Hays fired a five-hit shutout and scored a pair of runs to lead Brock past Hallettsville, 3-0, for the Class 2A state softball championship. Brock (31-8) becomes the first team in University Interscholastic League history to win the state girls basketball and softball titles in the same year. Hallettsville (32-10) finishes second in their first ever trip to the state tournament. Hays was named Class 2A final MVP after striking out nine and scattering five hits, three to Hallettsville left fielder Timisha North. Hays scored from second on a first-inning sacrifice bunt and an error, drawing a throw at third that sailed wide. She and Dayla Jones scored insurance runs in the third on Brock catcher Cheyenne De La Garza's hit.
CLASS 5A Smithson Valley 1, Pearland 0: Bailey Watts threw a two-hit shutout, and Smithson Valley beat Pearland 1-0 for the Class 5A softball title. Watts, named the game's MVP, overcame a shaky first inning in which she walked three batters. After that, she did not allow a Pearland runner to second base. She struck out seven and retired the final 11 hitters in a row. Smithson Valley scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning when Katie Repole's bunt single brought home Brennan Bowman. Kayla Booker had two hits for Smithson Valley. Smithson Valley and Class 4A champion New Braunfels Canyon are in the same school district, Comal ISD. The two state titles mark the first time in UIL softball that one district has two state champions in the same season.
CLASS 4A New Braunfels Canyon 4, Angleton 2: New Braunfels Canyon scored all four runs in the fourth inning to beat Angleton 4-2 for the Class 4A state softball championship. Mandy Ogle had the game-winning hit: a two-run single that scored Sara Mireles and Brittany Gomez and gave the Cougarettes a 3-2 lead. Ogle was named the game's MVP. Mireles notched her 33rd pitching victory of the season as she hurled a complete game, scattering eight hits and striking out two. Angleton scored a run in the third and fourth innings. Gabby Banda drove in Hayley Galloway with a third-inning single and Galloway drove in Ceteria Foster in the fourth.
CLASS A Forsan 2, Alto 1: Shortstop Ambra Hill scored one of two first-inning Forsan runs and turned two double plays as Forsan beat Alto. Hill led off the first for Forsan (26-9) with a double. D'Amberley Averette was hit by a pitch. After a double steal, they scored on grounders by Shelby Jones and Kelsey Jones. Lauren Watson scored the only run for Alto (29-8) in the sixth when she was hit by a pitch, advanced on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly, then scored while Forsan argued that Watson left second prematurely. |
