Three of Garland's runners, seniors Jacques Caldwell, Alex Williams and Jarrett Ben, have been running together since the sixth grade, and all have Division I scholarships in either football (Caldwell, Ben) or track (Williams). They are joined in the relay by Byron Attaway. Defending 5A champion Fort Bend Hightower boasts the nation's No. 1 time at 1:24.06, which it ran at the Region III meet. Hightower established a state record (1:23.92) en route to winning the 2007 title. Waxahachie burst onto the scene at the Texas Relays with its run of 1:26.24, which ranked seventh in the nation. It enters the 4A state meet seeded third (1:26.68) after finishing second to Waco (1:26.47) in Region II. Madison's Greg Jordan, Bobby Hicks, Tyson Brown and Nathaniel Sowels will try to successfully defend the team's 3A state title.
