Track NewsTrack and field: Prosper junior soccer star making a sprint to state meet07:08 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008You need to be a sprinter to keep up with Prosper junior Kim Castleberry's schedule. This week's a doozy. Castleberry was expected to return late Wednesday night from a week-long camp with the Under-17 women's national soccer team in Florida. She's scheduled to board a bus for Austin today to compete Friday in the Class 3A 100 and 400 meters and run anchor on Prosper's 4x400 relay. Why does an elite soccer player even bother? "I started running track when I was 7," Castleberry said. "I've always had it in my blood." It also gives Castleberry a chance to represent her school, which she said is important to her. She doesn't play high school soccer because of her club (Dallas Texans Red '90) and national team commitments. Castleberry has the top qualifying times in the 100 (12.14) and 400 (57.18). It's a tough double because they are separated by only one event – the 4x200 relay – on the schedule. Castleberry finished fourth in the 100 last year. David Hinojosa |
