Track NewsTrack and field: Woodrow Wilson's Furlough shows he can run quite a bit faster06:52 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008Woodrow Wilson senior Kelvin Furlough has been too good for his own good in the 400 meters. "He always just kind of ran with the pack and coasted on the backstretch," Woodrow Wilson coach Tom Crabb said. "In district, he won the 400 by oh, 20 meters. In his prelim at regional, he also won by about 20 meters. ... We didn't really know what he could run, because he had never run the full 400 meters the fastest that he could." Everyone found out how fast Furlough is on April 26, when he won the 400 at the Class 4A Region II meet in 47.69 seconds. That was nearly a two-second improvement on his previous personal best of 49.29, which he ran the day before in the preliminaries. He enters the state meet with the top qualifying time in 4A. Furlough has been inspired by another 400 runner – his twin brother, Delvin, who is deaf. Running for Woodrow Wilson last season, Delvin beat Kelvin in the 400 at district and regionals, then finished fourth at state. After transferring to Austin's Texas School for the Deaf, Delvin won the 400 at last week's TAPPS 4A state meet. "We always compete in a lot of stuff," Kelvin said. "He's been pushing me, making me want to do better." Greg Riddle |
