Track NewsUIL track and field notebook01:16 AM CDT on Sunday, May 11, 2008Duncanville junior Brigetta Barrett upset the heavy favorite, Midland's Victoria Lucas, in the Class 5A high jump. Lucas is the nation's top jumper this season at 6-0¼ , and she won the 2007 state meet with a jump of 6-1. Barrett, who moved to Texas last summer from New York, was a state public schools indoor champion (5-9) and a silver medalist at the outdoor meet (5-8) as a sophomore. The high-intensity workouts at Duncanville, in which Barrett ran more than she ever had, prepared her to be a champion in Texas, she said. "They had us running the mile," Barrett said. "I'm like, 'What, a mile? I'm a jumper!' They're like, 'Get your butt out here and run this mile.' I think it helped my stamina to last long." High enough: Mansfield junior Shade Weygandt won her third straight 5A pole vault title, but the tears she shed after her final vault weren't tears of joy. They were tears of frustration. After vaulting a personal-best 13-10 at the regional meet, Weygandt couldn't clear higher than 13 feet at state. But that was still three inches better than second-place finisher Shelby Kennard of Rockwall, who vaulted 12-9. Two titles for Anna senior: Anna senior Cody Hughes ran up against the heels of an opponent several times on the second and third laps of the 2A 1,600. It was only a matter of time before Hughes made his move, and he won the race in 4:26.40. "I had a really strong kick, stronger than I thought," said Hughes, who will run at Texas A&M-Commerce. "It was hot, but was still a good race." The 1,600 title was Hughes' second victory of the meet, having won the 3,200 (9:44.84) on Friday. He was second at the state cross country meet in November. "It would've been nice if I would have got the cross country, too, and the triple crown, but I'll take these two," Hughes said. "I'm not going to cry about these." Promising starts: A pair of first-time state qualifiers who left the 5A meet with silver medals were happy with their performances. Mesquite Horn junior Olivia Amy (14.18) was edged at the end of the 100 hurdles race by Pearland's Jessica Flax (13.99). Amy said she ran a good race, but the outcome was bittersweet. "I could have been better, but seeing it was my first time out here, I'm happy." Colleyville Heritage freshman Aly Nielson placed second in the 5A 3,200 (10:54.48). Her strategy was to stay with the front pack and not forge ahead too soon. The rest, she said, took care of itself. "I don't think about it," Nielson said. "I'm a freshman; I don't have to worry." One-woman team wins title: Rochelle's Bonnie Richardson won the 200 and the high jump, finished second in the 100 and the long jump, and took third in the discus. The result: 42 points and a Class A team title won by one athlete. UIL officials couldn't remember another time when a girl won a team title by herself. |
