Klein Oak receiver DeSean Hales and Katy defensive back Trent Hunter were named the region's best offensive and defensive players of the year. The awards were announced during the 28th annual Houston Touchdown Club High School Awards dinner Wednesday.

Fort Bend Clements coach Jeff Hulme, whose surprising Rangers team faces Hunter’s Tigers team Saturday in the state quarterfinals, was named coach of the year by the Touchdown Club. Hales, who accounted for 1,632 yards of offense and 16 touchdowns for Klein Oak this season, beat out Stratford’s Andrew Luck, North Shore QB Jeremiah McGinty, David wide receiver Jarrell Jackson, Cy Falls running back D.J. Monroe and Westside receiver Michael Smith for the area’s top high school offense player award. Hales is committed to take those stats to the University of Texas next season. Hunter, who is committed to play at Kansas State, had been huge thorn in the side of area offenses this season. The senior had 100 tackles, 3 interceptions, 11 pass break-ups and 2 blocked kicks this season. He is expected to pad those stats as the Tigers continue their run through the playoffs and take their 13-0 record against Clements on Saturday at Rice Stadium. Friendswood linebacker Will Ebner, Spring Westfield DB Brodrick Brown, Lamar defensive end Steve Erzinger, Cy Ridge DB Royce Hill, Fort bend Marshall defensive end Leonard James, Yates defensive end Damion Square and Clear Lake DB Cody Worthen were also among the finalists for the Touchdown Club’s defensive player of the year honors.
