Shaun Uneh led Dulles’ scoring with 23 points in their 70-62 victory that gives them a state tourney berth. Dulles guard Abel Galliguez moved the ball and called the offense all game for the Vikings while contributing his 20 points in their win.
hsgt Madison found them selves out matched down the stretch and in major foul trouble. The Marlins were in the bonus for most of the second half, sending Dulles to the free throw line and had six players foul out. Dulles moves on to play in the state tournament in Austin, and in the words of Adrian Kuyinu, “We’re going to Austin baby!!!”
Regional Semifinals The Jack Yates Lions pulled out another come from behind playoff win Friday night at the Merrell center against Beaumont Ozen in the 4A regional semifinals. “Big Man” Anthony Thomas paved the way with 16 points, three blocks, and eight rebounds leading the Lions to a 60-58 victory. Teammate Brandon Peters did his share with 14 points, several of which came off impressive dunks. Ozen jumped out to an early lead on Yates applying good pressure and forcing the Lions to play their style of basketball. The Panthers were lead by Decarlos Frank with 12, and Stephon Moten racking up 15 points under the boards. The second half was a different story as the Lions came out with newfound intensity and a momentum swing that would prove to be a difference maker. Yates took control of the game, something they had yet to do up to this point, and entered the fourth period with a three-point lead. Yates’ guards Kenneth Jefferson and Darius Gardner mad their impact late in the game, taking control of the ball for Yates and controlling the clock, for the win. With the Lions’ win over Ozen, it places them in the regional finals, where they will face Wheatley to see who moves on to the state tournament in Austin. Wheatley tipped off against Smiley in a real shoot out as the second game from the Merrell center. These teams were neck and neck coming into the fourth period at a score of 63-62, but Wheatley continued to be on target hitting key shots down the stretch to give the Wildcats an 89-83 win advancing them to the regional finals.
The 5A regional semis double header took place at the Campbell center Friday night. The first game saw action between Madison and Hightower. Madison continued to prove their local dominance downing the Hurricanes 72-65 advancing them to the finals. The second match up saw action between Dulles and Chavez. Dulles was dominant on all sides of the ball all game moving on with a 70-42 point victory over Chavez. Madison and Dulles will face off tomorrow from the Campbell center at 1 p.m.
Regional Quarterfinals The Yates Lions kept state title hopes alive with a close win Tuesday night over the Huntsville Hornets in the 4A quarterfinals. Brandon Peters lead the Lions with 17 points in their 63-62 nail biting win at the Merrell Center. Yates went into half time with an 11-point lead of 40-29, but Yates had only stirred the Hornets nest. Huntsville battled back on the shoulders of the Ennis brothers. Big man Kirby Ennis did his work under the boards putting up 13 points, while guard and brother Justin Ennis ran the floor for Huntsville scoring 18 points. Yates had to make a late fourth quarter comeback, lead by sophomore Darrius Gardner who scored the go-ahead basket with 5.3 seconds left on the clock. In other action, Madison squared off against Cy Springs at the Campbell center in the 5A quarterfinals. Tommy Mason-Griffin led the charge for Madison scoring 27 points leading the Marlins to a 73-64 victory over Cy Springs. |
