TOP STORIESBASEBALL: Bellaire bombs Sam Houston, Lamar wins over Westside09:38 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 9, 2008It was an HISD district double header at Delmar’s Leeroy Ashmore Field Wednesday that displayed the match ups of Bellaire verse Sam Houston and Lamar verse Westside. Lamar’s dominating pitching and strong bats proved to be too much as the Redskins pulled a shut out on Westside. Redskins’ pitcher Neil Denison dealt Wolves’ batters, registering 10 strikeouts in Lamar’s 8-0 win over Westside. Denison was lights out all game giving up only four hits, but not allowing any runs.
HSGT Kevin Keith and Peter Godot lead the way offensively for Lamar, doing work with their bats. Keith hit a solo shot homer in the fourth inning, that landed somewhere around 290, and a 2 RBI single his next at bat. Godot hit a two-run triple off the wall in the fifth inning that put the game further out of reach. In the early game Bellaire blasted the Tigers of Sam Houston in four innings, giving the Cardinals back-to-back district wins. Bellaire bombed Sam Houston with 21 runs on 12 hits.
TUESDAY The Jones Falcons jumped all over Worthing’s pitching early and did not let up in their victory over the Colts, Tuesday at Leeroy Ashmore Field. The Falcons had huge second and third innings, scoring a combined 14 runs; eight in the second and six in the third, which lead them to their 16-4 win. Jones is currently in first place for their district and their big win today will help the Falcons’ pursuit for a playoff berth. A pitching change by Jones, that put Cedric Merson on the mound, proved to be a smart move as he struck out two of his first three batters.

MONDAY Back-to-back homers in the sixth inning were still not enough for Lamar to make their comeback against Bellaire Monday night at Leeroy Ashmore Field. Anthony Rindel and Peter Godot of Lamar sent two bombs over the left and left center field wall to bring the Redskins with in one run of Bellaire, before being closed out 11-9.
HSGT Bellaire’s bats heated up early, giving the Cardinals the lead through out the entire game, hitting homeruns in the second, third and fourth inning. Bellaire finished the game with 8 hits and 3 errors, while Lamar had 10 hits and 3 errors. This was the first time this season that these teams met in district play, so the rematch will definitely be one to catch.
