TOP STORIESBASEBALL: Taylor tops Cinco Ranch09:42 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 23, 2008The race for the playoffs in district 18-5A heated up Tuesday night when Cinco Ranch traveled to James Taylor high school to take on district rival Taylor Mustangs. In their first meeting, Cinco Ranch won the game on a last second run in the seventh inning, and with these teams fighting for the second place in their district, this game had a lot riding on it.
HSGT The score was tied at five all in the sixth inning when pinch hitter Taylor Schubert hit a deep sacrifice fly that scored the runner from third, to take the lead, helping his Mustangs to a 7-5 win, splitting. The Taylor Mustangs played smart baseball on the base path, advancing runners with steals and bunts. Taylor’s Cliff Archibald gave up five runs in five innings until he was pulled for relief pitcher Marcus Weymenn. Weymenn entered the game in a tight spot with the bases loaded, and struck out the first batter and forced a pop fly to escape the inning. Weymenn closed out the seventh inning, striking out two more and forcing the other to ground out.
HSGT Cinco Ranch’s Johnson Miller launched a three-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Cougars their first lead of the game, but could not hold on as the Mustangs proved to be too much winning 7-5, splitting the series.
