TOP STORIESBASEBALL: Sterling eliminates Elkins in game three05:44 PM CDT on Saturday, May 17, 2008 Sterling came alive early in game three of the Regional quarterfinals, knocking off Elkins to move on, Saturday at Bobb Cobb Field. A two-run bomb by Chance Smith, followed up Hunter Cervenka’s solo homer to give the Rangers a three-run lead over Elkins, that proved to be a difference maker in their 8-5 victory over Elkins. Smith’s homer redeemed him after last nights’ game where he struck out in his plate appearances.
HSGT Trevor Swint’s sixth inning homer put the game out of reach, scoring two more runs giving Sterling a commanding lead. The Elkins Kinghts tried to make a late push, led by Drew Best, loading the bases, but only scoring two runs, while trying to close the gap. The Knights’ late game efforts were valiant, but not enough to over take the six and seventh round pitching combo of Brett Marshall and Hunter Cervenka. Cervenka entered in the seventh inning, in a save situation, getting the first batter to ground out, and struck out two more, to sew up the win and semifinal berth.
HSGT Sterling will be facing West Side in the regional semifinals.
In other playoff action, the Alvin Yellow Jackets beat down Brazoswood in the quarterfinals, to move on and face Bellaire. |
